A review of the Cityspots Guidebook to the Spanish city of Madrid. Spain's capital city.

The Thomas Cook range of Cityspots, Hotspots and Travellers series are great little pocket-sized guidebooks, jammed with information.

The Cityspots guidebook to Madrid holds a wealth of great information in a small and handy package.

This superb little pocket guide has Madrid’s most famous attractions and museums and the not-so-well-known places that are worth a visit.

The book introduces Madrid with sections on history, culture, where to go and when to go, as well as dates for its fiestas and ferias and national bank holiday dates so you don’t get caught short by shops and banks being closed.

There are also intriguing little snippets on making the most of Madrid from “shopping” to “something for nothing” sections and “on arrival” to when it rains information.

The book is nicely laid out, easy to use and makes an interesting little read whether going to Madrid or not!

The information for Madrid the city is split into helpful sections such as Old Madrid and Cultural Madrid and the book also gives information on which metro station to alight for a visit to the area, individual building or park recommended.

Each section comes with additional information such as helpful phrases to use while dining out or shopping and price guides for the various restaurants and hotels covered.

Not only are streets maps for the different areas included with metro stations marked on, but metro maps too for a clear, easy and great cheap alternative to taxis.

The guide also has a top ten list of “The Best of Madrid” describing what to do and what to see in Madrid – its top ten attractions is a useful gathering of must-see and must-dos.

And if there’s not enough to be able to fit in all the top ten then there’s even suggestions of how to get the best out of Madrid in only a half-day trip, a one day trip or a 2-3 day trip.

When the top ten and a take a break section is complete and there’s still a few days to spare then the out of town section has various great day trips to suggest. Faunia, a natural history museum/zoo or the medieval town Siguenza with a fine castle and cathedral are two of those on offer.

Or why not a take a train trip to the birthplace of Cervantes created of Don Quixote?

This book is packed from beginning to end to make an enjoyable and memorable stay.
