When it comes to designer chic, the capital of Catalonia in Spain has a wide range of hotels to choose from, with avantgarde interiors concealed in art nouveau buildings.

OMM

The ultimate in Barcelona cool, the Omm was designed by the team responsible for many of the city’s signature restaurants, clubs and bars. Expect a hip, media crowd in the bar, and a host of celebrities in the Moo restaurant, run by the Michelin-starred Roca brothers. Shiny white lacquer screens divide up the minimalist rooms, many of which overlook the bustling Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city’s main shopping streets. Don’t miss the Spaciomm spa and Ommsession club in the basement, or the plunge pool on the roof.

CRAM

Located in the upscale Eixample area, the Cram occupies an elegant building dating back to 1892. Via the website, guests can express how they are feeling by choosing the colour used to light up the front of the hotel, which changes every evening in accordance with their moods, creating a spectacular effect.

Designed by Josep Riu and Beatriz Cosials, the Cram opened in 2005 and has 67 sumptuous rooms of different shapes, following the curve of the building’s structure. There is a Michelin-starred restaurant run by chef Carles Gaig and a roof terrace where breakfast is served in summer.

NERI

An 18th-century mansion in a secret square in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter houses a sumptuous boutique hotel with 22 rooms, decorated with satin, silk and velvet in sensuous tones. The design varies from storey to storey, with Renaissance details on the first floor, brightly-coloured florals on the second and lavish gold tones on the top floor. The restaurant, which is popular with non-guests, serves original Mediterranean dishes with Arab touches, created by chef Jordi Ruiz.

CHIC&BASIC BORN

Located in the hip Born district, this is a pioneer of a new wave of edited luxury hotels aimed at people who want stylish accommodation at reasonable rates. Expensive extras have no place at Chic&Basic Born, where the emphasis is on funky, fun design. While décor in the predominantly white rooms is pared down to minimalist basics, guests can set the mood by turning a switch that changes the hues of the lighting. There is no room service, you just help yourself to drinks and snacks from a fridge in the lounge, or pop down to the trendy bar and restaurant on the ground floor.

AXEL

Although renowned as one of the best gay hotels in the world, everyone is made to feel special at the Axel. Situated in an art nouveau building, rooms are filled with light and have pale wooden floors and superior quality beds. Some have stained-glass galleries from which to survey the street scene below. Up on the roof, there is a sundeck, bar and jacuzzi, while on the ground floor there is a busy restaurant.
