Valladolid is a couple of hours’ drive north-west of Madrid in the heart of central Spain, and is a destination worth visiting in its own right. It’s a historic city, and for a brief time was the capital of imperial Spain. Unfortunately, the city’s most famous son was the infamous Fray Tomas de Torquemada, the zealous leader of the Spanish Inquisition who had a penchant for a spot of torture.

Valladolid was also the city in which legendary explorer Christopher Columbus died, and the house in which he lived has been preserved and opened to tourists.

The city has a bit of a buzz about it, and is a good place to head out for a big night. This is largely due to its burgeoning student population, but increasingly large swathes of tourists are joining in the fun these days.
