Gardens to Visit in Granada ProvinceGardens and Grounds Open to the Public in Southern SpainSome of the lesser known gardens open to the public in Granada province in Southern Spain include concert destinations and a summer home of the famous Spanish poet Lorca.
Aside from the most famous gardens of all in Granada, the Generalife Gardens within the The Alhambra grounds, Granada province boasts some other fine gardens worthy of a visit. From the coastal botanical gardens of Almuñecar to the central city centre gardens of Granada University here are a few worthy places to stroll around while visiting Granada. Huerta de San VicenteThis was the summer home of the famous Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca who wrote some of his most important works while staying here, he was staying here in the days of the Spanish Civil War before his arrest and assassination in August 1936. The house now a museum and grounds are both open to the public as part of the Garcia Lorca Park. Several famous artists have performed in the grounds here, see the official website for more information and its opening hours. Carmen de los MartiresNear the Alhambra this is a delightful house built as a summer house by Don Carlos Calderon and later the surrounding grounds were landscaped creating a terraced garden with fountains, statues and grottos - even an ornamental lake with a wooden bridge and a folly watchtower. These formal gardens and pretty patios are situated in the heart of Granada on the site of a Muslim cemetery which was destroyed during the Christian Reconquest. They became part of the ground belonging to the old royal hospital which in now the present day University. Jardines de TriunfoThere are more than 17 different varieties and over 200 trees including Acacia, Magnolia, Mountain Elm and White Mulberry. It's even more decorative at night with the 75 metre long water course being illuminated. Almuñecar - Par ue Botanical El MajueloSituated below San Miguel Castle and among the vestiges of Roman fish salting factories this is Europe's largest collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants. The collection mainly from South America, Africa and Asia consists of more than 400 species of plants and trees. It's often a venue for festival and concerts during the summer months and in July there's a week long Jazz festival held in the grounds. The park is open during daylight hours in the summer and until 7pm in the winter. Although the gardens are open all year round the best time to visit has to be in the early evenings of summer when the heat of the day has receded slightly and a buzz of people emerge from their siesta to stroll around the beautiful grounds.
