The Costa del Sol is the sunshine coast of southern Spain and Nerja is the hot spot for a beach holiday. Explore the different types of accommodation and what they offer.
Nerja, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, is a favourite holiday destination with people from other parts of Europe, Scandinavia and the US. Holidaymakers find that they can relax into the unhurried Spanish way of life and enjoy the temperate climate and beautiful landscape of mountains and sea.
Accommodation in Nerja offers a good choice. There are the usual large and small hotels, and several alternatives including self-catering apartments and the hostals which are excellent value.
Self-catering accommodation can include renting villas or apartments. Capistrano Villages in Nerja comprise 5 communities of pretty white houses and apartments. Several of the houses are residential but many are used as holiday homes or are rented out to holiday makers. Each of the villages has a pool and beautiful communal gardens full of subtropical plants in blazing colour all year round.
The most attractive of the Capistrano Villages, this complex has won awards for its striking landscaping and architecture. The terraced apartments and villas cling to the cliff face and lead down to Burriana beach. It is in a great location but you do need to be fit to manage the considerable number of steps. Alternatively, stay at home and use the pool available to guests.
Another possibility for self-catering accommodation in Nerja are the aparthotels which offer the freedom of your own apartment with the advantages of hotel facilities. Each apartment has a kitchenette with a fridge, hotplates and microwave oven. There is usually a restaurant and bar in the building, although wherever you are in Nerja you will not have to go far to find somewhere to eat.
Above the Salon beach, the Toboso Apar-turis has a bar, an Irish pub, and a restaurant with inside and outside seating areas overlooking the sea. Ask for an apartment with a sea view and a terrace. The apartments are in Nerja’s sociable town centre, at the popular Balcon de Europa, from which, they say, on a clear day you can see the coast of Africa across the sea. The beautiful church, Iglesia del Salvador is in the square outside of the apartments. Most Saturdays in the summer there is a wedding which is a great occasion for dressing up in this part of Spain! Other great advantages of the Toboso are the gym, sauna, solarium and swimming pool. Ask about special offers for your Nerja holiday if travelling out of the summer months.

Hostals are a type of guesthouse, much better than hostels, usually offering rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a simple café which serves breakfast and snacks. Some have a laundry service. Their rates are less than half of an average hotel making them even more affordable for a budget holiday in Spain.
The family run Hostal Miguel is on a busy street, within easy walking distance of shops, beaches and Plaza Tutti Frutti which is the focus for Nerja nightlife. Breakfast is served under parasols on the sunny roof terrace, with views over the town towards the mountains. There is also a breakfast room on the ground floor for the rare days of rain. The family are friendly and helpful – full of advice on where to go and what to do. This hostal has a minimum stay of 2 nights, but many other hostals will accept bookings for 1 night.
