Some parts of Spain have gained a reputation for catering for the masses. The Pollensa area of Mallorca offers peace and tranquility with lots and lots of sun!

Spain has become identified in the popular imagination a destination for mass tourism. When people think of the Costa's they often picture high rise hotels, densely packed beaches and rowdy clubbers over indulging on cheap alcohol. It isn't an attractive prospect if what one is looking for is the tranquility of North Wales but with guaranteed sunshine.

So why not consider a holiday in Mallorca, in the northern area around Pollensa? By going a little distance from the well beaten tourist track one can find an area of Spain that is more conducive to family holidays, where one can relax on beaches that are not over populated and where the scenery, the culture and the climate are much more suitable for a relaxing visit.

What Makes Pollensa a Family Friendly Destination

Pollensa is a small town on the North Eastern tip of Mallorca. It has not been spoiled by over exploitation whilst still offering a wealth of facilities to the holiday maker. The seas are clean and warm and provide safe bathing for the whole family. The local restaurants cater for English speaking visitors and are very child friendly.

Villa or Apartment Holidays on Mallorca

Staying in hotels isn't always easy, especially if one is traveling with small children whose needs do not necessarily coincide with a typical hotel experience. Villa and apartment holidays provide a great way of getting around this problem because it is a "home from home" way of traveling. If doing housework while on holiday does not appeal, then the maid service option provided by many companies may be just the answer. There are also baby sitting services, mobile hair salons and food delivery options,

Touring Mallorca from Pollensa

Mallorca is a beautiful island, largely dominated by the Tramuntana Mountains which create a stunning backdrop to Pollensa. There is much to see in the immediate area including the ancient town of Alcudia with its maze of medieval streets, and the beautiful Port of Alcudia.

Pollensa beach offers many amenities to make family holidays more enjoyable. On the beach there are recliners and umbrellas for hire (5 Euros per adult), showers, toilets and proximity to restaurants. Take advantage of excursions that run from Pollensa to the mountains, water parks, shopping tours and the local markets, visit a ranch or maybe take a ride in a helicopter.

There is a facility for hiring a boat for the day for those who want to explore the coastline or take off for a day's fishing. The hire costs vary from three hundred to three thousand Euros a day!

Eating Out on Mallorca

The area around Pollensa boasts some very fine restaurants where the local Spanish cuisine can be sampled. For a snack the locals enjoy Tapas - a selection of delicacies to suit all tastes. The local specialities include paella, black rice (cooked with squid ink), locally caught fish, suckling pig which can be purchased from local bakeries on Sunday, and a host of local wines, cheeses and sausages.

Visit a Mallorcan Bodega for Wine Tasting Sessions

A popular excursion is a visit to a Bodega (wine cellar). For a few Euros one can enjoy a wine tasting session in the cool of an ancient winery some of them still boast the enormous barrels and acoutrements of wine making. In early spring there is a wonderful wine festival in Pollensa where for 5 Euros tourists may enter the Cloisters for wine tasting.

During the last week in September there is a wine festival in the wine producing area of Binissalem, home of Mallorca's largest vinyard, Jose Ferrer. Book ahead for wine tasting sessions at the larger bodegas or wineries to avoid being disappointed.
