Originally a small farm and orchard, Cortijo Romero offers a variety of week-long alternative, holistic and personal development course holidays throughout the year.

The courses at Cortijo Romero range from activities like yoga, writing, dancing, singing or reflexology to ones with titles like "Bring Your Dreams To Life" or "Open Up Your Heart".

Cortijo Romero Holidays Lifestyle

For most who go to Cortijo Romero, usually around twenty at a time, another attraction is undoubtedly the simplicity of its lifestyle.

The bedrooms (small but en-suite), eating area (outdoors for much of the year on a shaded terrace), lounge, course rooms, swimming pool and sun terrace are all within a few yards of each other.

In addition a large garden provides plenty of room for those who at times feel they need their own "space".

Pale and Stressed People at Cortijop Romero

Many people who go arrive looking pale and stressed due, it usually emerges, to personal problems or the pressure of high-powered jobs.

Yet by the middle of the week almost everyone looks utterly relaxed. Anxious eyes and tense smiles are soon softened by friendship and laughter.

Day’s Programme at Cortijo Romero

The Cortijo Romero day starts with a session of Yoga or Tai Chi for those who want it.

Breakfast (fruit juice, cereals, yoghurt, toast, honey, jams) is followed by a short meeting at which one of the staff explains the day's programme and outlines any excursions being planned, such as a coach trip into the hills or to Granada or a walk into Orgiva, the nearby town, for market day. Then comes a basic Spanish lesson for those who want it.

The main course session is from about 10.30 to 1 o'clock, followed by lunch. All the food is vegetarian, which some meat-eaters find rather lacking in variety at times, though it is invariably tasty.

Wine and beer are available for purchase and tea, coffee, fruit juice and biscuits are all available free day and night.

Nude Swimming at Cortijo Romero

The afternoons are left free. Some people have a long siesta while in summer others relax in the large garden and sunbathe or swim (often nude).

The kidney-shaped pool, shaded by large palm trees and cascades of flowers is big enough to satisfy good swimmers but has a large shallow end where any non-swimmers are soon encouraged to try a few strokes.

Evenings at Cortijo Romero

Dinner is at 7.30. After it, some stay chatting at the tables for hours, interrupted only by forays to get yet another bottle of wine. Most weeks a local English woman came in to lead an evening dance session based on the "Five Rhythms" and on another evening one of the Spanish staff sings traditional songs.

On the final night, there is usually an impromptu cabaret.

Cortijo Romero is Magic

"This place is just magic" is a common saying at Cortijo Romero, particularly on the warm tiled roof above the main course room where people often gather on warm evenings to see the sky ablaze with stars.

Indeed many people go to Cortijo Romero year after year, attracted they say by its simple friendly lifestyle.

Similar holidays are provided at the Skyros Centre and Atsitsa on the Greek island of Skyros.
