If you're heading to inland Andalucia, avoid the enormous International airport of Malaga which, with its bedlam of major buildings works, make access really difficult. Instead head for the small airport near Granada.
Granada airport, or El Aeropuerto de Frederico Garcia-Lorca Granada-Jaen, is situated to the north-west of Granada city in the area called la comarca de la Vega del Genil.
It’s only in recent years that this airport has been in use for international flights. It is a small airport that consists of one small terminal building. You can sit in the café and watch the queue go down for boarding, taking your time, with no worries about which gate to embark from.
Located near Santa Fe, Granada airport is easy to find. If you are travelling by car from Granada or Jaen, from the A92 you need to take the Sevilla direction. The airport lies around 105 km from Jaen city and 8km from Granada city.
Buses and taxis are abundant and the taxi fare to or from the city to the airport should be no more than 25 Euros and takes around 20 minutes. The bus fare to or from Granada should be around 3 Euros. A bus leaves the airport after every flight arrival but tickets can be booked online. The journey takes about 40 minutes.
Parking at Granada airport is ample. If it’s long-stay parking you want, look out for Helle Hollis or L.G parking which charge 5 and 4 Euros respectively. Short stay and drop-offs are right in front of the small terminal building. The cost is 0.40 centimos up to 30 minutes, 0.90 centimos up to 1 hour and 0.95 for each additional hour.
The airport is a 90-minute drive from Malaga, 125 km away, and a 75 minute drive from Jaen city, access is well sign-posted and there is very light traffic with little congestion.
It is not possible to get to Granada airport by train, but there are good connections from Granada train station to the airport by bus or taxi.
Car hire is available from the airport through various companies which provide free shuttle buses to and from the terminal building.
Most of the flights that come into the airport are national flights from Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga as well as other Spanish cities. Flight companies such as Iberia, Spanair, clickair and Vueling operate these internal or connecting flights.
Budget airlines that fly from the U.K. into Granada airport include the companies Monarch, Ryanair and Avro.
Granada airport is easily accessible and offers a really easy option to Malaga or even Madrid, for a small airport with a quick get away it could even save journey time and parking costs not to mention the lack of traffic as the airport is outside the city.
