Special offers allow a stay in three spectacular historical hotels located in Santiago, Bayona and Vilalba.

Spain has currently 93 paradores. The establishments are state run luxury hotels, located in the most interesting and fascinating historical castles, monasteries and sights on the Spanish peninsula including the Canary Islands and Ceuta.

The concept allows a combination of enjoying history in comfortable and luxurious surroundings. Difficult financial times are reflected in special offers which are now available. When traveling in Galicia, the northern province of Spain, there are three paradores worth a visit.

Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos

The biggest of the three is the Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos in Santiago de Compostela. "Hostal", a word usually associated with youth hostels, is a misnomer for this hotel, but historically justified.

Located on the Praza do Obradoiro, just opposite the cathedral, the hotel dates from the 16th century. It was founded by the Reyes Catolicos as a hospiz for pilgrims who followed the Camino de Santiago, needed shelter or fell ill.

Entering the hotel and turning left, the visitor reaches a salon which is famous for its exhibition of works of art, sculptures, paintings and elaborate silver ware. The hotel has four interior patios and the terrace outside on the left from the entrance allows ample views over the old town. It's considered one of the best hotels in Galicia.

Castillo Monte Real in Bayona

Equally dating from the 16th century, the parador Castillo Monte Real invites the visitor to the pretty sea side town of Bayona, south west of Vigo and near the border to Portugal. The castle is vast and the well kept gardens alone are worth a visit. From its walls, the visitor has spectacular views of the Atlantic.

The King of Spain comes here every year for a special dinner and never fails to mention how much he enjoys it.

Torre de Andrade in Vilalba

A century older and located in the opposite direction, in the north east of Galicia, is the medieval town of Vilalba, dominated by the Torre de Andrade and a parador of which the tower forms the center piece.

Much smaller and cosier than the other two, this parador features a small and sheltered courtyard with a walkway connecting to the tower. Th hotel is an ideal starting point to excursions into the nature reserve of Fragas do Eume.

Prices and Discounts

As mentioned above, the current economic situation has led to big discount possibilities for the otherwise expensive paradores. (Average price for a double: €200). There isfor instance the GOLDEN DAYS scheme for travelers aged 55 or over with a 30% discount. Or else, the YOUNG PERSONS' GET AWAY scheme for people between 20 and 35, or 5 and 3 night packages. Depending on season and location, other special offers are available.

It's time to take advantage of the offers and to enjoy the unique landscape, history and scenery of Galicia in luxury and comfort which otherwise might be a heavy burden to the bank balance.
